Planning and Organizing Content

Plan Your Website

Often people have a hard time imagining what their site might look like. Your designer will be able to come up with ideas for you. If you do have ideas it is best to mention them right away.

Form Follows Function

Traditionally good design will serve the function of your site. This means think about what the purpose of your site is. In general a website provides information.

Actual Art advice is that it is usually best to keep it basic, clear and to the point.
(... unless, of course, your intent is to be oblique, scattered, uncertain or just plain odd.)

There is always the option of being quirky at will.

Contact Information

  • When an e-mail address is posted on a website it will become a spam magnet. So, it is always a good idea to have a special mailbox that is exclusively for your web mail.
  • Use a zip code, since some searches search and categorize by zip code.
  • You might want to post a business phone, mail address or office location.
  • It is NOT a good idea to put personal information like your home phone or address on a website.

Organize Your Content

Think about your audience.

Consider who you are trying to attract to your website, or who is your website serving.

You will have to provide your site builder with the information for your site.
You know your business best. Consider your audience while you write content.

  • Your website will have a first page. This is the page people will see first and it is usually the one they go back to for access to your whole site.
  • Think about important information you want up front or accessible by links from the first page.
  • Think about category headings, catchy phrases or slogans.
  • Organize your content into categories that are logical page links.
  • Try to write sentences and paragraphs that are clear and to the point.

Keywords and Description

  • Write a list of key words that you think people would use as search terms looking for your site.
  • Write a sentence describing your site including important keywords.
  • It is a good idea to keep keywords in mind while you write all your content.

In general

  • Gather together your content, notes and visual elements before building your site.
  • Your content, the information you provide on your website, is the most important part of your site. It is the sites reason to exist.
  • Also, be sure to proof read your website carefully after a draft is built and again after it is up and running. Typos and glitches happen and need to be caught.
